The image brings spine and music analogies together: a folding fan whose surface resembles a record. Its ribs give it an articulated structure; the grooves suggest something inscribed that could be sounded through movement. As an image for the essay, it leaves the question open: what does the arrangement preserve, and what must happen for it to become audible?

A neural network’s weights bear the history of their formation, much as Darwin’s living forms carry traces of their descent. Yet explaining how an answer becomes possible does not establish what makes it adequate. Through Plato’s account of discourse and Derrida’s critique of a pure origin, this essay examines how questions and answers emerge within inherited relations while remaining answerable to what they concern. The robotic dance partner crystallizes the problem: we have built something that can coordinate with us, but what is the music to which we both respond? Operative absence names how the demand for an adequate answer can guide the exchange before that answer has been found.
