The central question of this inquiry is not simply how human existence can be described, but how the lived organization of human existence can become expressible in language without fracture.

Human beings have always attempted to understand themselves through language. We have developed systems of knowledge capable of describing the body, its mechanisms, its structures, and its histories. Yet the very success of these descriptions has revealed a persistent difficulty: the experience of being embodied often exceeds the conceptual frameworks through which it is analyzed. The body, before becoming an object of scientific investigation, is already a lived reality. It moves, perceives, adapts, remembers, and acts prior to explicit reflection. It is not first a collection of parts and then an experience; it is an organized unity through which experience itself becomes possible.

The problem, therefore, is not merely one of insufficient information. Modern science has accumulated extraordinary knowledge concerning anatomy, physiology, genetics, and evolution. The deeper problem concerns the relationship between knowledge and the phenomenon it seeks to understand. How can language approach a living organization without transforming it into something fragmented? How can description preserve the unity of what it describes? This question emerges from the recognition that the human body is not merely an object possessing functions, but a dynamic organization of capacities. A movement such as walking, grasping, speaking, or breathing cannot be adequately understood by isolating the individual components involved. Each capacity emerges through a complex coordination of structures, histories, environments, and relations. The activity reveals the organization that makes the activity possible. The task, then, is not yet to provide a completed theory of human realization, but to formulate the conditions under which such an inquiry could become possible. Before developing a science of capacities, one must ask what kind of language would be adequate to the phenomenon of life itself. This problem places the inquiry at the intersection of several philosophical traditions. Aristotle’s account of natural development raises the question of how living beings are understood through the realization of their capacities. Darwin’s account of evolution reveals that biological forms are historical realities, carrying within themselves the traces of their development. Merleau-Ponty demonstrates that the body is not first an external object but the lived condition of perception and action. Derrida reveals that identity is never completely self-contained, but emerges through relations, differences, and traces of what exceeds it.

Together, these perspectives suggest that the body may be understood as a historical and relational form of organization. Its identity is not isolated but constituted through exchanges with what is beyond itself: the environment, other organisms, inherited structures, and the conditions that allow its capacities to emerge. The question that follows is therefore not simply how to describe the human body, but how to discover a language capable of remaining faithful to its organization. Such a language would not reduce life to mechanisms, nor would it abandon precision for abstraction. It would seek an articulation in which structure, activity, history, and lived experience remain connected. I. Introduction: The Problem of the Body as Object and Process

Modern medicine has achieved extraordinary precision in analyzing the human body through specialized disciplines: anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, genetics, and pathology. However, this analytical success has often produced a fragmentation of the organism into separate systems. The body becomes a collection of organs, mechanisms, and processes rather than an integrated living form.

The philosophical problem is whether the body can be understood prior to this fragmentation: not merely as an object observed from the outside, but as a living organization whose structures exist through the capacities they enable.

Function is not an accidental description added after the fact; it is part of the explanation of the thing itself.

This teleological perspective does not necessarily imply an externally imposed design. Rather, it identifies a principle of internal organization: living beings exhibit forms of development in which parts and activities belong together within a coherent whole. The teleological dimension proposed here is not a claim that nature follows an externally imposed blueprint, but that living forms exhibit immanent tendencies of organization through which capacities become actual.

The question raised by this framework is whether the organization of human capacities can be described with sufficient precision to become measurable.

III. Darwin: The Body as Genealogical Reality

Darwin transforms the study of life by introducing historical depth into biological explanation. In On the Origin of Species, Darwin argues that organisms must be understood as the products of long histories of transformation. Structures and instincts are not isolated inventions but accumulated results of inherited variation, environmental pressures, and adaptive relationships.

Darwin’s claim that biological classification will become genealogical represents more than a change in scientific method. It reveals that organisms themselves are genealogical realities. The body contains its own history.

Organs, structures, and capacities are historical formations. The vertebrate limb, the human spine, the nervous system, and the sensory apparatus all represent solutions accumulated through time. The present organism is therefore not merely a collection of parts; it is a historical synthesis.

This raises a further question: if organs possess genealogies, can capacities also possess genealogies?

Can we trace not only the history of structures, but the history of the activities those structures make possible?

Such a project would investigate the emergence of:

  • upright posture,
  • locomotion,
  • manipulation,
  • speech,
  • perception,
  • metabolic regulation,
  • sleep,
  • social interaction.

The organism becomes not merely a biological object but the historical realization of a field of possibilities.

IV. Merleau-Ponty: The Body as Lived Organization

Phenomenology introduces another dimension to the problem: the body is not first encountered as an object. It is encountered as the medium through which experience becomes possible.

Merleau-Ponty argues that the body is not something we simply possess; it is the condition through which we inhabit the world. Before theoretical reflection, there is embodied engagement. We do not first calculate movement and then act. We move through an embodied intelligence.

This insight is essential for understanding capacities.

Walking is not merely the mechanical coordination of muscles and bones. It is a lived organization involving perception, balance, intention, environment, and bodily memory. Labor reveals this especially clearly. Activities such as lifting, carrying, bending, and climbing disclose the body as a system of practical intelligence.

The body therefore cannot be fully understood from the outside alone. Its organization is revealed through the activities it enables.

V. Derrida: Relational Identity and the Trace of the Body

Derrida’s concept of the trace provides another way to understand biological organization. Identity is never completely self-contained; it is constituted through relations to what exceeds it.

The organism demonstrates this principle materially.

The body depends on what is not itself:

  • oxygen from the atmosphere,
  • nutrients from external environments,
  • microbial communities,
  • gravitational forces,
  • social and ecological conditions.

The organism’s identity is therefore relational. It exists through exchanges with an outside that becomes incorporated into its own functioning.

Contemporary systems biology provides a scientific framework increasingly compatible with this philosophical orientation. Rather than studying isolated components alone, systems biology examines networks, feedback loops, emergent properties, and dynamic regulation.

The organism is understood as a complex adaptive system involving:

Health therefore becomes less a matter of isolated measurements and more a question of systemic coherence.

To identify measurable principles governing the coherence, adaptability, and realization of biological capacities.

The goal would not be a simplistic ideal body, but a mathematical and biological description of possible configurations of flourishing.

The first task is to define the basic activities through which human life is expressed:

Each capacity would be analyzed through the systems that make it possible:

3. Reconstruct Their Historical Development

Using evolutionary and developmental approaches, one would investigate how these capacities emerged and transformed over time.

4. Measure Degrees of Organization

The final task would be to determine whether flourishing can be quantified through patterns of integration and regulation.

The objective would be to move from a descriptive science of parts toward an explanatory science of organized capacities.

VIII. Conclusion: Toward a Grammar of Life

The human body may be understood as a historical text written through biological relations. Its structures are not arbitrary arrangements of matter but expressions of accumulated histories and realized capacities.

Aristotle provides the concept of development toward realization. Darwin provides the genealogy of biological form. Merleau-Ponty reveals the body as lived organization. Derrida reveals the relational structure through which identity emerges. Systems biology provides the possibility of formalizing these insights through measurable networks.

Together, these perspectives suggest a new question:

Can the principles by which life organizes itself be discovered as a grammar of embodied existence?

Such a project would seek neither to reduce the body to mechanisms nor to retreat into abstraction. It would attempt to understand the human organism as a living unity: a historical achievement whose structures, activities, and environments form a continuous field of organization.

The body would then become not merely something to be observed, but something to be understood as the unfolding expression of life’s own internal logic.

EPILOGUE: RATIONALITY AFTER STRUCTURE — THE BODY AS THE SITE OF IMMANENCE

The preceding inquiry has attempted to approach the human body not as a finished object awaiting description, but as a living organization whose intelligibility emerges through relations, histories, and capacities. Yet this investigation leads to a further philosophical question: what kind of rationality is adequate to a form of existence that is never fully contained within its own structures?

The human body may be understood as the site of a post-structural rationality par excellence: a rationality in which structure is not denied, but understood as emerging through relations, differences, and processes of organization. This movement is not reducible to the organization of the body alone. Post-structural rationality does not mean the abandonment of structure or reason. It names a form of intelligibility in which order is understood as emergent, relational, and dynamic rather than fixed, centralized, and self-identical. Not because it lacks structure, but because its structures do not exist as isolated foundations. The body demonstrates that organization does not require a single center, a fixed hierarchy, or a complete self-contained identity. Its unity emerges through relations among differences. This is the meaning of immanence. The principles governing the organism are not imposed from outside. They arise through the relations internal to life itself. Rather, it describes a mode of organization in which order emerges through the relations of the system itself. The alternative would be a transcendent model of rationality, in which form is imposed upon matter from an external principle. The organism reveals a different possibility: that rationality may arise internally through the coordination of processes, the regulation of differences, and the maintenance of coherence across change. Life does not lack form because it is dynamic; rather, its form consists precisely in its capacity to organize itself through movement. The body does not first exist and then encounter its world; it is constituted through its continuous exchange with what exceeds it. Oxygen, nutrients, gravity, microorganisms, social relations, and historical inheritance are not external additions to an already complete organism. They participate in the formation of the organism’s very identity. The body therefore challenges any understanding of form as something closed and complete. Its form is active. It is maintained, altered, repaired, and transformed through continuous relations. The organism is not merely a structure; it is the activity by which structure persists. This insight also transforms how we understand dysfunction. A deviation from health is not simply the failure of an isolated part. It is a disturbance within a relational organization. Illness reveals that the organism is not a collection of independent components but an integrated field whose elements exist through their coordination.

If the organism is a relational field rather than a closed mechanism, then its states cannot be understood merely as mechanical outputs. They must also be understood as variations in its capacity to persist, adapt, and act within its environment. Here Spinoza’s philosophy of affect becomes relevant. For Spinoza, emotions are not external forces acting upon an otherwise rational subject; they are expressions of the body’s changing capacity to act. Sadness represents a decrease in our power of acting, while joy represents an increase. Anger, when understood through this framework, can be approached as a particular configuration of diminished or obstructed power: an affect arising when our relation to the world is experienced as a limitation, injury, or interruption. This does not mean anger is merely sadness in disguise. Rather, it reveals that affects are not irrational disturbances opposed to reason. They are forms of embodied intelligence. The body may be the place where philosophy discovers that form is not merely what something is, but what it continually becomes through its relations. A future science of embodied existence would therefore not seek only to map the components of life. It would seek to understand the rationality by which life organizes itself: a rationality not imposed upon the living, but emerging from within the living itself.

The body is therefore not merely a structure to be known, but a movement of realization through which life articulates its own intelligibility without being reduced to a fixed form. It does not reveal a world without structure, but a world in which structure is generated, maintained, and surpassed through relations.
